Fazal began his career in 2008 with small roles in a romantic comedy film The End of the Line, directed by James Dodson. He then starred in the American Television miniseries Bollywood Hero in 2009, which laid him to get another acting job as the lead actor in the erotic thriller Ek Tho Chance in 2009. The movie focused on the dark comedies of life, especially in Mumbai. Later the movie, Ek Tho Chance, premiered at the 14th International Film Fest-Kerela.
In the same year, Ali made his Bollywood film debut in 3 Idiots in which his role Fazal portrayed as an engineering student named Joy Lobo. The movie was a major success and launched him into stardom. Then in 2011, Fazal starred in the romance film Always Kabhi Kabhi, under Shah Rukh Khan’s production house called Red Chilies Entertainment.
