Saina Nehwal took her first breath on March 17, 1990, in Hisar, Haryana, India. Her father, Harvir Singh Nehwal, worked at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University. Her mother, Usha Rani Nehwal, was a state-level badminton player. Saina raised alongside her elder sister Chandranshu Nehwal, who played Volleyball at the national level. Her zodiac sign is Pisces.
She did her first few years of schooling at Campus School CCS HAU, Hisar, because her father was promoted and transferred from Haryana to Hyderabad. Saina Nehwal started playing badminton at a very young age, but she made her International debut in 2006. She became the under-19 champion and created history by winning the prestigious tournament, the Asian Badminton Satellite Tournament. She was the only one to win this championship twice. A few months later, she participated in the World Championship, where she lost to Chinese player Jiang Yanjiao.
In 2007, she went on to England to participate in the All England, where she faced a top player Wang Chen in Round 2, but lost in 3 games 21-17, 13-21, 16-21. After that, she represented India at the Sudirman Cup in Scotland.
After facing back-to-back defeats from Wang Yihan, she became the first Indian to win World Junior Badminton Championship. In 2008, she participated in Beijing Olympics, where she was unseeded. She became the first Indian player to reach the quarter-finals at the Olympic Games, where she won over Asian Games champion no. four seed Wang Chen of Hong Kong in a three-game thriller.
Saina won the Syed Modi International by defeating Carolina Marin in 2015. Same year, she won her maiden Women’s single title at the India Open by defeating Ratchanok Intanon. That helped her to achieve the no. 1 spot when the latest BWF ranking released on April 2, 2015.

In early 2016 she dealt with some serious injuries. But she eventually recovered. After that, she played in the semifinals of the Badminton Asia Championship after defeating the third seed Wang Shixian, but she settled for a bronze medal. She then played the Australian Superseries before making her third appearance at the Olympics. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, she won her opening match against the unseeded Lohaynny Vicente. However, she lost her second match against the Ukrainian Marija Ulitina by 18-21 and 19-21.
In 2017, she went to Malaysia Masters. But she couldn’t do much that year due to her injuries. After recovery from injury, she won the 82nd national championship by beating P.V. Sindhu in the final. In 2018, she sealed the finals in Indonesia Masters. En route to the finals, she defeats 3 of the top world players such as, Chen Yufei, P.V. Sindhu, and Ratchanok Intanon. Later, she won her second gold in Commonwealth Games Women’s singles.
