He was very inspired by Mohammed Rafi since the age of four and wanted to sing like him. In his childhood, he usually joined his father on stage shows, at weddings, and at parties. Later, he moved to Mumbai, a city of dreams, with his father to pursue his career in singing. He was trained by the Hindustani classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
He first sang the song ‘Kya Hua Tera Wada’ originally sung by Mohammed Rafi, with his father on a stage. Since then, he never looked back. In 1993, he made his debut with his first Bollywood song ‘O Aasman Wale’ from the movie Aaja Meri Jaan. Then, in the same year, he rolled out his debut album, titled Rafi Ki Yaadein.
In 1995, he started hosting a popular singing reality show, Sa Re Ga Ma. The turning point of his career was when he released ‘Accha Sila Diya’ for the film ‘Bewafa Sanam’. In 1997, he sang Sandese Aate Hai, which gave him huge recognition and fame. Later, released Yeh Dil Deewana for the film Pardes in the same year. After that, he sang many superhit songs, including Satrangi Re, Ishq Bina, Ruki Ruki, Mujhe Raat Din, and many more.
His most popular songs are; Suraj Hua Maddham, from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Tanhayee from Dil Chahta Hai, Tu Fiza Hai, and Saathiya. He received his first Filmfare Award for Best Playback singer for the song Saathiya. After singing Kal Ho Naa Ho in 2003, he became widely popular across the nation. The song earned him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer as well as the Filmfare Award.
He later sang many super hit songs such as Tumse Milke Dil ka, Chup Chup Ke, Pyaar Ki Ek Khaani, Sun Zara, Chori Chori Chupke Se, Main Agar Kahoon, Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe, Zoobi Doobi, Aal Izz Well, Mere Hath Mein, Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye, Abhi Mujhme Kahin, Chori Kiya Re Jiya, Bhagwan Hai Kahan Re Tu, and many more songs.
