Srikanth Kidambi began his career in the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games and won the bronze in doubles and silvers in mixed doubles. He came into the mainstream media after winning both singles and doubles category at the All India Junior International Badminton Championship held in Pune.
In 2012, he toppled the Junior World Champion Zulfadil Zulkiffli of Malaysia in the Maldives International challenge and claimed the men’s singles title. Kidambi is one of the finest badminton players India has ever produced. In 2013, he won the men’s singles title by defeating the world number 8 and local favorite Boonsak Ponsana in straight sets at the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold event.
Following his previous success, Kidambi beat reigning champion and Olympian Parupalli Kashyap in the All India Senior National Championship in Delhi to claim his first senior national title. In 2014, he finished runner-up at the India Open Grand Prix in Lucknow.
After that, he palyed in the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow and reached the semi-finals of the mixed team events. In November 2014, he gained recognition from all badminton lovers at the China Open Super Series Premier by beating 5-time world champion and 2-time Olympic champion Lin Dan in straight games (21-19, 21-17).
Then, he defeated Kento Momota (15-21, 21-16, 21-10) and Tommy Sugiarto (21-18, 21-13) in the group stage of the prestigious BWF Super Series Masters Finals, where he lost to Chen Long of China. In 2015, Srikanth became the first Indian male to win a gold medal at the 2015 Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold.
In 2017, Kidambi and Sai Praneeth created history by becoming the first Indian pair to enter the finals of a ranking event in badminton. Srikanth and Praneeth are hail from the same state, Hyderabad, and coached by Pullela Gopichand. He won the Indonesia Super Series and became the first Indian male player to do so.
Kidambi was more successful at the Commonwealth Games on Gold Coast in 2018. He won gold in mixed events and a silver medal in the singles. In the same year, he achieved the No. 1 spot for a week during the same period. Srikanth had a disappointing 2018 Asian Games where he lost both singles and mixed events.
In 2022, he represents India by being a part of India’s men’s team for the Thomas Cup 2022. India went on to win the Thomas Cup by defeating Indonesia 3-0 in the finals.
